LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

At a glance, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga looks like it's going to be a compilation of the many (many) LEGO Star Wars games that have gone before it, but booting it up reveals something far more ambitious. Rather, The Skywalker Saga seamlessly knits together the stories of Episodes I through IX in a single map, making them playable in any order and throwing in tons of other content to boot. It is, effectively, a Mass Effect game for lovers of mini-figs. The core LEGO gameplay is definitely intact - adventure, platforming, puzzling and combat are delivered with whimsical panache (Emperor Palpatine accidentally issuing Order 67 and starting an impromptu stormtrooper disco, anyone?). But it's been both broadened and deepened. There are hundreds of characters and vehicles and an incredible amount of freedom on offer. Play as heroes such as Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gonn Jinn, Chewbacca, Leia Organa, and Poe Dameron, or join the dark side as the likes of Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine. Fancy a drive? Take the Millennium Falcon to light speed or fly a T-47 airspeeder against the AT-ATs on Hoth. Meanwhile, the usual floating camera POV of LEGO games has been switched to a much tighter third-person angle reminiscent of something like Gears of War or Uncharted. The result is much more dramatic, flowing combat, with boomeranging lightsabers and cover you can rebuild even as it's being shot to pieces around you. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a sprawling, rollicking adventure that will most likely stand as TT Games' definitive statement on Star Wars.
