About this item The Drake Silver Medal Map, a sterling silver replica of the famous 1589 medallion created by Michael Mercator to commemorate Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580. Issued in 1977 to mark the 400th anniversary of the voyage, in conjunction with the National Maritime Museum. Measuring 69mm in diameter, the medal depicts the world map across both faces: the Old World of Europe and Asia on one side and the New World of the Americas on the other, with Drake's route traced by a dotted line. More than twice as thick as the 1589 original, it is a substantial piece of solid sterling silver. Supplied in the original presentation box with certificates of authenticity, a beautifully made collectable of real historical and cartographic interest.
