Specific description (Xbox 360 version, no DLC): Set on the fictional tropical island of Banoi in Papua New Guinea, the story follows one of four playable survivors—Xian Mei, Sam B, Logan Carter, or Purna Jackson—who discover they are mysteriously immune to a sudden zombie outbreak that devastates the island. Stranded amid chaos, the survivors must work together to rescue other survivors, uncover the cause of the outbreak, and find a way to escape the quarantined resort island. Gameplay is presented primarily from a first-person perspective and combines open-world exploration, survival horror, role-playing progression, and melee-focused combat. Players travel across interconnected environments including luxury resorts, urban districts, jungle areas, and prison facilities while completing story missions and optional side quests. The game places a strong emphasis on close-quarters combat, allowing players to use and modify a wide variety of improvised weapons such as bats, machetes, knives, hammers, and pipes. Each playable character possesses unique attributes and a distinct skill tree that can be developed by earning experience points and leveling up. Weapons degrade through use and require repairs, while crafting stations allow players to create enhanced weapons by combining blueprints with collected materials. Firearms become available later in the campaign but ammunition is comparatively limited, encouraging continued use of melee weapons. The Xbox 360 version includes a complete single-player campaign and supports cooperative multiplayer for up to four players online throughout most of the story. The original base game contains all launch content available on disc, excluding the Bloodbath Arena mode, Ryder White campaign expansion, and any additional downloadable content released after launch.
